The following write up will look at the 'Wraith' event weapon, assuming

  • A generic hero loadout (i.e. the majority of Ninjas/Outlanders/Constructors) without damage increasing hero skills for ranged weapons
  • Element: Physical vs Physical Husks
  • DPS and DMG values and thresholds
  • A comparison with the Tiger (which has a similar damage drop profile)
  • 'Ore' weapons will be used for this comparison and without scaling due to offense, schematic level, etc.

Nov 15, 2019 16% life leech and 48% weapon dmg is really low especially when it only works at night time, making the perk way stronger but only works with melee can give you a true hunter feeling SLOW YOUR ROLL. Freeze melee attackers for 2 second(s). Mist Monsters are slowed by 43%. REQUIRES: 3 heroes with 3 or more stars.

Note: The Bonus 30% Damage (from x5 headshots in a row) is excluded for the purposes of determining perks. I do have the numbers for such a scenario, but I'm not including them in this write up due to space considerations.

At this time of writing, stormshield.one hasn't actually updated their database, so values are derived from in-game UI (UI 'could' be wrong, but given the values seem reasonable it probably isn't).

Discussion

For clarity, I haven't included all the headshot (threshold) values for the Tiger (e.g. for DPS) because

  • 1. The best in slot perks change between having reload speed and magazine size every few % (and it'd be a nightmare to format it for reddit)
  • 2. Most people probably don't care anyway and it'd take up a lot of space with minimal value.

It's probably important to note that 'DPS' values (as noted in these values) do not assume an 'infinite ammo with no reload' scenario. That means the total damage in a cycle (fire all shots from magazine) is divided by the cycle time of the weapon (time to fire all shots + reload so you can fire again). The DPS value is only meaningful in a scenario where you're trying to empty your magazine completely, reload and then repeat it non-stop. This sort of scenario 'might' occur against something like a mini-boss, but would be completely unrealistic even against Smashers (they just don't have the health pool to justify this sort of attack). Husks spawn approx 10 tiles away from an objective in defensive maps and take about 20 seconds to travel to the objective (1 tile per 2 seconds, it's actually a little slower, but it varies based on husk type). That means for the majority of husks you have 20 seconds or so to land your attacks, and most husks will die in 1-2 attacks anyway.

Wraith vs Tiger @ 0% and 100% headshots

This should be fairly clear but

  • Wraith gets better 'DPS' than the Tiger
  • Wraith has worse 'avg dmg/shot' than the Tiger

Avg Dmg/Shot doesn't take into consideration the weapon cycle time. It looks purely at the damage potential of the attack, factoring in headshot, critical hit chance. Both weapons fundamentally use the same medium ammo type and it should be clear that the Tiger will (on average) hit harder on any given bullet than the Wraith will. I've included the various 'components' of an attack (bodyshot, headshot, crit damage bonus) in the tables above, you can see for yourself that the Tiger will fundamentally hit harder for any given bullet.

Stuff as %'s

  • The Wraith will do (depending on your headshot %) between 1.7% to 23% more DPS than a Tiger (higher headshot % makes the difference smaller, i.e. the 1.7% is at about 100% headshots)
  • The Tiger will do (regardless of headshot %) approx 24% more avg dmg/shot than the Wraith

Closing

For me, 'DPS' as a 'metric' in a game like Fortnite is stupid. That should be fairly clear from the fact that you can 1-2hko most husks with the majority of weapons and they take at least 20 seconds to travel from their spawn to the objective. It's ok if you're comparing melee weapons (because they don't need to reload) but once you start trying to apply 'dps' as a concept to ranged weapons you distort the view of the world. The Wraith can do more dps, but the weapon itself (for any given attack) is significantly weaker than the Tiger.

We don't know the durability cost per attack (at least until stormshield.one updates properly) so I can't compare those at this time of writing and even the damage drop profile is an assumption based on the in-game UI (though I'm fairly certain it'll match the Tiger's damage drop profile). I doubt this would change my recommendations though.

If I had to pick between

  • Wraith or Tiger: Tiger
  • DPS or Avg Dmg Perks: Avg Dmg (for Wraith or Tiger)
  • Use the Wraith as a 'mini-boss killing weapon': Hell no, there are better weapons

I've provided the headshot thresholds (for dps and avg dmg perk builds) so you can have a rough idea on what perks to pick if you use the weapon for yourself. Ultimately it is your choice after all and 99% of the time your hero and weapon choices will not influence whether you pass or fail a mission. Please be aware that the 54% headshot threshold for DPS perks on the Wraith uses the conditional damage per for mist/mini's and not a standard damage perk (so it's actually worse vs regular husks and would do even less damage if you used a normal damage perk).
