Instead regenerate it and remove the shield and remove it from combat. That would require damage being dealt on both sides. Thrun would deal 4 dmg to the 5/4 killing it.
also, I couldn't tell if you knew this or not by the question, but the regeneration has to be activated preemptively. Once first strike combat damage has been dealt it's too late, because after that step and before the regular combat damage step state-base actions will be checked before either player receives priority. So, the game will see that the Tormented Hero was dealt lethal damage and it'll be put into the graveyard before you get a chance to cast a spell in between the two combat damage steps. Typically what you would do is.. after you declare your blockers both players will get a chance to play spells or activate abilities, this is when you you would cast your Boon of Erebos and it will create a regeneration shield on the hero (a regeneration shield means that there is a replacement effect that will trigger when the creature is destroyed causing you to tap it and remove it from combat). That way once you go into the combat damage steps and damage is dealt the replacement effect will replace the act of it going into the graveyard with tapping it and removing it from combat.
Apr 05, 2014 Turn 8 I play Kalonian Hydra and give it Trollhide (regenerate) and pass. Opponent is out of cards, topdecks, and uses some card draw ability. Passes to me, I attack with the Hydra. He plays Doom Blade. I tap lands to regenerate. After a long discussion, he concedes that regenerate can be used on a destroy spell. He then plays another Doom Blade. I tap more lands for a second regenerate. Jul 17, 2019 Regenerate is a former evergreen keyword action until it was removed from evergreen status after Oath of the Gatewatch. Regenerate Vs Combat Dmg Mtg 2
Regeneration is a destruction-replacement effect. The word 'instead' doesn't appear on the card but is implicit in the definition of regeneration. 'Regenerate [permanent]' means 'The next time [permanent] would be destroyed this turn, instead remove all damage from it, tap it, and (if it's in combat) remove it from combat.' Abilities that trigger from damage being dealt still trigger even if the permanent regenerates.
