However, as far as I can remember, Fortnite doesn’t really give you much of an explanation of elemental enemies and the elemental weapons you need to quickly kill them. So this quick little guide will help make things a little more clear.

Fortnite has three types of elemental enemies:

  • Fire (Red/Orange in color)
  • Nature (Glowy yellow in color)
  • Water (Frosty blue in color)

To counter these enemies, your guns have a chance of rolling an element. They can roll water, nature, fire, as well as energy damage. Any gun Epic in rarity or above that rolls an element should be kept, as elemental enemies will become more common and at a certain point non-elemental guns won’t cut it anymore.

How to Fight Elemental Enemies in Fortnite

Fire Guns

  • Fire guns do 100% damage against nature enemies
  • Fire guns do 50% damage to water enemies
  • Fire guns do 67% damage against fire enemies

  • Water guns deal 100% damage against fire enemies
  • Water guns do 50% damage to nature enemies
  • Water guns do 67% damage to water enemies

Nature Guns

  • Nature guns deal 100% damage against water enemies

  • Nature guns do 67% damage to nature enemies

Energy Guns

  • Guns of the Energy element do 67% damage to all elemental enemies.

Physical Gun

  • Against any elemental enemy, a non-element, physical damage only gun would do 50% damage.

Elements and Walls

It is a little known fact that certain elemental enemies do more damage to certain wall types. However, while interesting, it shouldn’t really effect your strategy that much.

I still don't know why people think weapon speed has ANYTHING to do with whether element or status is good on a weapon. The only thing that matters is how much element or status the weapon has vs how much raw it has, the motion values for raw on that weapon, and the raw / elemental hitzone weakness of the specific monsters you are fighting. Monster hunter do monsters suffer status effects from elemental dmg.

Elemental enemies and the wall material they damage more includes:

  • Fire does more damage to Wood Walls
  • Water does more damage to Brick Walls
  • Nature does more damage to Metal Walls

Burning, erosion, and corrosion! It is pretty easy to remember, but not wholly helpful knowledge to know since a wave may be of one element, but the next wave could be of a different element. What are you gonna do? Tear down your Tier 3 walls? I don’t think so.

This means that as you get to later Canny Valley and beyond, you want one gun in each slot (and a melee weapon in your inventory for flingers). You want each of those guns to be of different elements (Fire, Nature, Water) to handle the large amount of elemental enemies. This is crucial since elemental Smashers are possible and are just as terrible as you think. Energy weapons are okay, but not preferable to having three elemental guns to handle each element.

When you finish any mission in Fortnite, the game will not only show how much XP you earn towards leveling up, but you will also see what level chest you got for a mission. If you are doing maps solo, you will always get low level reward chest while playing with a party yields higher rewards.

However, the distinctly confusing thing is seemingly doing the same thing on two missions of the same objective, but getting different level reward chests. It is pretty baffling and still to this day no one has a firm grasp on what exactly you need to do to get that coveted level 7 reward chest every mission, every time.

Why Aim for The Highest Level Mission Reward Chest?

Before we get into the thick of it, some might wonder why they should even aim for a level 7 mission reward chest in the first place. Well, when you queue into a mission, there will be a list of rewards. However, you won’t see how much of that reward you will receive, and that is what the level of mission reward chests decide.

For example, if your mission offers up survivor XP as a reward, a level 2 mission reward chest might give you 800 survivor XP while a level 6 mission reward chest might give you 5000 survivor XP. Obviously you want that higher number.

To add on to this, lately there have been timed rewards for missions, such a 12 pure drops of rain, Epic AR transform schematic, ect. These are not affected by mission reward chests as it already has a set amount.

What Effects The Mission Reward Chest Bar

Like with the XP bar, your mission reward chest will need to fill a similar bar and fill it seven times to get the maximum reward. For each bar there are ten brackets and while it would be great to be able to say confidently what fills how many brackets, things are a bit more complex than that. So what will affect the bar and see it raised?

  • 100% Map Exploration – 2 Brackets – When there is no more gray fog of war on your map and everything is visible, you have fulfilled this. The game will alert you when it happens.
  • Filling the Combat Bar – 2 Brackets – Kill things. In many missions you can max this out from doing the main objective alone.
  • Filling the Utility Bar – 2 Brackets – This is about crafting and gathering. You will notice that as you destroy things with your pickaxe, this will slowly build. However, the fastest way to build this is to craft. Crafting weapons give the biggest boost. This is why it is best to wait to craft traps and weapons until you are in a mission you intend to complete.
  • Filling the Building Bar – 2 Brackets – If you have built your base but don’t want to overbuild, you can build in the wilderness far away from the base. The building bar is also increased by upgrading your structures as well.
  • Completing Group Activities – 4 brackets – Occasionally there might be a side mission that pops up randomly like the Drone Crash event. Doing it takes a couple minutes, gives rewards, and gives a decent bracket boost for the mission chest, so it is worth doing if possible.
  • Doing Side Things – This doesn’t show up as an actual bar that gives brackets, but there are many who believe that doing encampments and saving survivors (on non-Encampment or Rescue the Survivor mission maps) does make a difference. Since the bracket reward can vary for other objectives.
  • Completing Bonus Objectives – 6-ish Brackets – Some missions will have bonus objectives such as find the site before Rey, finish within X amount of days, do not allow building to dip below X percent of health, ect.
  • Staying Within Build Limits – 6-ish Brackets – Try your hardest not to overbuild and note that traps count towards this build limit.
  • Main Objective Completion – 15 to 20 Brackets – Well, if you don’t complete the mission, you get a reward, but it is miserable.

*Note – For filling the combat, utility, and building bars, they need to be all the way full. This means if it is colored gold, but only half full, it will count as silver. So if you want to get platinum, it needs to be filled all the way up.

I know you are doing the math and that ends up just around a level four/five chest, and yeah, that’ll happen. That is why people are so confused about this as the bracket amount changes per mission and per input. However, often you get multiple bonus objectives or even main objectives that can have an effect. This has also made it so, again, people highly suspect that doing extra things like rescuing survivors adds brackets in some categories.

For example, if you do a Build the Radar mission and you build all the bonus radars, you get points towards completing the objective and completing the bonus radars. However, you won’t get points for not going over the build limit or completing in X amount of days like you would with Fight the Storm, thus why it is so hard to nail this down and will be easier or hard to get a max chest per the mission.

What is The Best Way to Get High Level Mission Reward Chests

The best way to get a high level chest is to do as much as possible, as quickly as possible. Perhaps it would be more apt to say that your team needs to do as much as possible, as quick as possible. In all honesty, it is better to prioritize some objectives over others.

Obviously you will want to focus on objectives relating to the mission. If you have to sacrifice something like maxing out your building bar just to complete the mission within the speed run bonus mission parameters, the bracket gain is more worth it. Ideally, you would want both though.

Considering Mission Type

The honest truth is some missions give more bracket gains than others natively. The absolute easiest mission to get a level seven mission reward chest is to Launch the Rocket. If this is giving good rewards, it is worth doing. Because it has three stages and gives a massive bracket boost for all three stages as well as a Rocket Launched reward, you get tons of chest reward brackets for that alone. Furthermore, it is likely your combat, building, and utility will be easily maxed during the course of preparing for launch as well.

Other easier missions include Fight the Storm and Ride the Lightning.

The fact that all of the more time-intensive missions give easier to get higher mission reward chests makes a lot of sense. I know if I could easily get a level seven chest for Rescue the Survivors, I would only do those super easy, farming-friendly missions.
